One Common Future: What the partners of the Erasmus+ project “Guardians of the Coasts” discovered through their meetings in Greece

How can a coastline truly be protected?

The answer does not lie within a single scientific discipline, a single public institution or a single citizens’ initiative.

It lies in the meeting point of all of them.

This philosophy shaped the first international study visit of the Erasmus+ project Guardians of the Coasts, hosted in Greece by FOTOESSA – Centre for Education, Research and Action, with the participation of the Portuguese partners Rita Sousa (Aequalitas) and Rafaela Fortunato and Beatriz Pereira (Impactrip).

From the outset, the purpose of the visit was never to conduct a series of formal courtesy meetings. Instead, the partners were invited to meet people who approach coastal protection from different professional backgrounds and perspectives, yet share a common commitment: protecting our common goods and strengthening active citizenship.

The journey began with the local authorities, through meetings with the Mayor of Saronikos and the Deputy Mayor for Tourism. These discussions highlighted the crucial role that cooperation between public institutions and civil society can play in the sustainable management of coastal areas and the development of resilient local communities.

The next step focused on the scientific community. During their visit to the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), the partners explored how scientific research contributes to understanding marine ecosystems and supporting evidence-based coastal protection. This perspective was further enriched through their meeting with environmental scientist Iasonas Markantonis, who presented the natural processes that shape coastal environments and the environmental challenges they currently face.

The legal dimension of protecting common goods was introduced through discussions with lawyer and President of the Saronikos Youth Council Gabriel Kokkinis and lawyer and environmental activist Antonis Sifakis. Their contribution demonstrated how legal knowledge, democratic institutions and awareness of citizens’ rights become essential tools for safeguarding public space and encouraging responsible civic participation.

An equally important part of the programme was devoted to civil society. Environmental activist Christos Kotsireas, educator and volunteer coordinator Anastasia Ioannidou, Zacharo Fratzeskou, President of the Cultural Association Fokaeon Politeia, diver and environmental volunteer Angeliki Spanea, together with volunteers from the Free Beaches Citizens’ Movement, shared experiences that illustrated different expressions of active citizenship. Through their work, participants discovered how environmental stewardship, education, cultural heritage, volunteerism and collective civic action can complement one another in protecting coastal commons.

Each meeting offered a different answer to the same fundamental question:

How do we protect a place?

Sometimes through scientific knowledge.

Sometimes through public administration.

Sometimes through law.

Sometimes through education.

Sometimes through culture.

Sometimes through volunteerism.

And sometimes through the everyday commitment of active citizens.

The partners quickly realised that none of these approaches is sufficient on its own. Meaningful coastal protection emerges only when these different forms of knowledge, expertise and civic engagement come together, complement one another and build lasting partnerships.

These meetings became much more than an introduction to the Greek reality.

They provided the living foundation upon which the project’s first educational workshops were designed. The ideas, experiences and reflections gathered during these encounters are now being transformed into participatory learning activities that encourage environmental awareness, active citizenship and stronger engagement of local communities.

This is, ultimately, the vision of Guardians of the Coasts.

To build bridges.

Between science and society.

Between local knowledge and international cooperation.

Between personal experience and collective responsibility.

Because coastlines are much more than natural ecosystems.

They are places where history, culture, democracy, cooperation and human experience meet.

And their protection always begins with people who, despite their different journeys, choose to work together towards a common future.

Our Beaches.
A Common Good.
A Shared Responsibility.
A Common Future.

🇪🇺 Co-funded by the European Union.
