Sharing Stories from Our Beaches: Exploring the Human Meaning of Coastal Places<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"4 July ’26 – As part of the Erasmus+ project Guardians of the Coasts<\/strong>, FOTOESSA organised the second experiential storytelling workshop entitled “Sharing Stories from Our Beaches”<\/strong>, bringing together members of the local community in an educational journey that combined personal storytelling, active listening and collective reflection.<\/p>\n

The workshop was built upon the principles of Narrative Inquiry<\/strong>, recognising that stories are not simply accounts of past events but opportunities for people to explore their own experiences, discover new meanings and strengthen their connection with others. Participants were invited to share a personal story connected with a beach that had left a lasting imprint on their lives. These stories ranged from childhood memories and family traditions to moments of personal transformation, friendship, loss, hope and belonging.<\/p>\n

The activity began with participants locating on a map of Greece the beach connected with their story, creating a visual representation of the geographical diversity of the group’s experiences. Rather than introducing predetermined workshop rules, participants collectively defined the conditions that would allow everyone to feel safe, respected and heard through the symbolic metaphor of the “Flying Carpet”, establishing together the values of trust, empathy, confidentiality, active listening and mutual respect that would guide the entire process.<\/p>\n

As each participant shared their story, the rest of the group practised active listening without interrupting or evaluating the narrative. Instead, they recorded emotions, values and abstract concepts inspired by each story. At the conclusion of the workshop these words were brought together to create a collective “Psychological Map of the Beaches”<\/strong>, revealing the emotional landscape emerging from the group’s shared experiences.<\/p>\n

Although every story was unique, remarkable similarities appeared across the narratives. Participants repeatedly identified emotions such as nostalgia, joy, serenity, gratitude, hope and love, together with values including trust, respect, freedom, kindness, courage, solidarity and belonging. These recurring themes demonstrated that beaches are not only natural environments or places for recreation but also spaces where identities are shaped, relationships are formed and communities are strengthened.<\/p>\n

Participants’ evaluations confirmed the educational value of the workshop. Many described the experience as deeply moving, emphasising the opportunity to listen to stories that reflected their own lives while discovering unexpected common ground with others. Several participants referred to the workshop as an experience that strengthened their sense of belonging and reminded them of the importance of listening to people’s life stories before forming opinions about them.<\/p>\n

The workshop also illustrated how storytelling can become a powerful educational methodology for promoting active citizenship. By encouraging participants to reconnect with places through memory and shared experience, the activity fostered empathy, dialogue and collective responsibility for coastal heritage. Rather than approaching environmental protection exclusively through scientific knowledge, the workshop highlighted the importance of emotional attachment to place as a foundation for long-term civic engagement.<\/p>\n

This workshop represents another important milestone within the Guardians of the Coasts<\/strong> project. The stories, emotions and values collected throughout the activity will contribute to the project’s educational resources, future workshops and dissemination activities, demonstrating how local knowledge and lived experience can enrich environmental education and strengthen community resilience.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, the workshop reaffirmed one of the project’s central ideas: coastal protection begins with human connection<\/strong>. When people recognise the personal, cultural and emotional significance of coastal places, they become more willing to care for them, protect them and work together for their future.<\/p>\n
