Its learning journey begins with personal identity, moves through each participant’s story and culture, encounters the story of the other and ultimately leads to the creation of something shared.

On behalf of FOTOESSA, Aspasia Protogerou, ALF-certified Intercultural Trainer of Trainers, facilitator in non-formal education and children’s book author, contributes to the co-development of the educational approach. Drawing on her experience in intercultural dialogue, participatory learning and storytelling, she contributed an original story with intercultural content together with related pedagogical activities, which form part of the core educational material for the development of the joint proposal.

For this reason, the stay in Greece of Hadhami Henia, educator and representative of ATAC from Tunisia, was not limited to working meetings between the two partners. Engagement with people and initiatives from the local community became part of a process of research, listening and exchange of experiences that can inform the future educational proposal.

At the Folklore Museum of Kouvaras, the meeting with Ms Giota Drakou brought into focus the relationship between local history, personal memory and collective identity. Building relationships of trust and exchanging experience are essential both for social participation and for any educational process seeking to create genuine dialogue.

A particularly important field of dialogue emerged during the meeting with Ms Zacharo Frantzeskou, President of the cultural association “Fokaeon Politeia”. The association preserves the historical memory of the Phocaeans of Asia Minor, their forced displacement and their resettlement in Greece and Palaia Fokaia. The meeting highlighted issues of memory, loss of homeland, population displacement, new beginnings, cultural continuity and a sense of belonging.

These themes have particular value within a Greece–Tunisia partnership. Throughout the meetings Hadhami Henia had the opportunity not only to learn about Greek experiences but also to compare them with experiences, challenges and examples from Tunisia. The exchange was two-way. Greek stories raised questions about Tunisia and Tunisian experiences brought new perspectives to Greek realities.

This process lies at the heart of the project concept being jointly developed by FOTOESSA and ATAC. The shared DRAW – SHARE – CONNECT – CREATE approach uses creativity as a tool for empowerment and resilience-building, enabling young people to express their identities, share their stories, encounter the reality of others, challenge stereotypes and create something together.

At the next stage, the storytelling and pedagogical material contributed by Aspasia Protogerou will be adapted by Hadhami Henia to the social and cultural context of Tunisia and used with young people there, with particular emphasis on empowering young people at risk of early school leaving and preventing their disengagement from education.

The encounters with the Folklore Museum of Kouvaras, the Free Beaches Movement, the BWL “SaronOikos” Network and “Fokaeon Politeia” therefore provided much more than information about Greece. They provided real stories, local experiences and different forms of collective identity and participation that can be transformed into educational material, questions and methodologies for future cooperation between young people from the two countries.

Within Mobility for Partnership, mobility is the means rather than the final objective. The objective is what can be created through the encounter: a joint proposal that responds to real needs and transforms knowledge from both sides of the Mediterranean into a new framework for intercultural learning.

Different lines.
