On 14 October, the Greek Guardians of the Coasts team learned about Brigada do Mar, a Portuguese organisation combining coastal clean-ups, volunteering, recycling initiatives and environmental education.<\/p>\n

Activities, meetings and practices<\/strong><\/p>\n

At Escola da Trafaria<\/strong>, the organisation presented an environmental education programme involving six schools over the year. Through interactive workshops and hands-on activities, students are encouraged to connect marine pollution with their daily habits, consumption choices, waste prevention, recycling and the reuse of waste materials to create useful and artistic objects (upcycling). We then visited Brigada do Mar\u2019s laboratory, where the team introduced the collection, sorting and identification of materials recovered from beaches, particularly plastics. Examining marine litter does more than remove rubbish: it helps reveal its sources, recurring patterns and consequences for marine wildlife. In the Brigada do Mar laboratory, plastic from the waste collected from the shores is reused to create various structures and objects, following the philosophy: ‘Do lixo ao luxo’, meaning ‘From trash to luxury’.<\/p>\n

Learning outcomes and relevance to GOTC<\/strong><\/p>\n

A central learning outcome was that a beach clean-up can be the beginning rather than the end of environmental action. Recording findings, discussing causes and supporting education can encourage more responsible behaviour and active citizenship. Protecting our oceans is not simply about removing waste. It also requires understanding the causes of pollution, preventing waste and encouraging environmental awareness from an early age.<\/p>\n
