In the framework of the Erasmus+ project “Guardians of the Coasts,” representatives from FOTOESSA and its Portuguese partner organizations—Rita Sousa from Aequalitas, alongside Rafaela Fortunato and Beatriz Pereira from Impact Trip—held a meeting with Ms. Victoria Simitzi-Mykoniati, Deputy Mayor of Tourism for the Municipality of Saronikos, which officially supports the initiative.
The discussion centered on the prospects for sustainable tourism development in the Saronikos region, the imperative to protect coastal zones and the natural environment, and the vital role of synergy between local government, civil society, and environmental initiatives.
Particular emphasis was placed on the region’s unique natural and cultural identity, as well as the necessity of establishing a sustainable tourism model that balances economic growth with a steadfast respect for the environment, public space, history, and human capital. As was underscored during the meeting:
“The protection of our coastlines and natural environment is not merely an ecological issue; it is a fundamental pillar of our culture and quality of life.”
Furthermore, the meeting explored avenues for fostering environmental awareness through active citizenship, volunteerism, and youth engagement.
In conclusion, the talks reaffirmed the critical importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration and local community engagement in shaping a sustainable and resilient future for the coastal areas of Saronikos.
